What’s Invisalign?

Team Invisalign

Take a moment to think about someone you know who had braces. What do the braces look like? If you picture metal wires and colorful brackets, you’re not alone. For many years, that was the only way to straighten someone’s teeth.

Like other areas of medicine, dentistry has seen tremendous technological advancements in the past few decades. One of the most significant changes has been the invention of clear aligners that straighten teeth. The most well-known brand of these aligners is Invisalign.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Traditional braces push and pull your teeth to get them into the desired position. For some people, this can be uncomfortable, and the look can even be embarrassing. Invisalign solves those problems with comfortable, nearly invisible trays that gently move your teeth into place.

If you choose Invisalign, you’ll start with a free, in-office consultation. Your dentist will complete a dental exam, talk about your options, and answer your questions. If you decide to move forward with the process, your dentist will take images of your mouth and send a 3D rendering to Invisalign.

Soon after, you’ll start wearing your first set of Invisalign aligners. You will slide your teeth into the thin, thin molds and wear them as much as possible for about two weeks. You can take them out to eat, but be sure to leave them in as you go about the rest of your day.

After about two weeks, you may start to notice that your teeth have moved slightly toward your goal. Then, you’ll switch to your next set of aligners. Each set gently pushes your teeth where you want them to be. In anywhere from 9 to 15 months, you have the smile you always wanted.

Is Invisalign Right for You?

Before committing to any care plan, it’s essential to understand the risks and benefits. For many people, the benefits of choosing Invisalign are clear.

Compared to traditional braces, Invisalign aligners are:

  • More comfortable
  • Less awkward
  • Faster

Furthermore, patients spend less time in the dentist’s chair because they can change their aligners at home. However, there are some reasons why some people do not choose Invisalign.

First, invisible aligners are generally more expensive than traditional metal braces. However, it is less costly than some other types of braces. Typically, if your insurance covers orthodontics, it will cover Invisalign, but not always.

Invisalign does not work for all people. Those with more complex cases or severe bites may not be able to use Invisalign. Only a qualified dentist can help you decide if Invisalign can work for you.
